What are Netpivotal's DNS servers?

If you have an existing domain name and you want to direct it to Netpivotal's servers, you will need to ask your existing registrar to change the DNS servers for your domain.

You might also be able to make a change if you have access to a control panel with your registrar.

Netpivotal's DNS servers are:-

NS1.NETPIVOTAL.COM
NS2.NETPIVOTAL.COM

Please remember that changes to DNS will need to propagate, and this can take several hours to complete.

Transferring a domain name to Netpivotal

The method of transferring a domain name varies according to the extension. Please see below for the most common domains;

Transferring a .com, .net or .info domain name to Netpivotal

With these domain names Netpivotal can request the transfer from your existing registrar. The procedure is as follows:-

  1. Make sure your domain name is unlocked and available for transfer. You can check this by looking at the WHOIS information for your domain. Also make sure that your email address is listed as the administrative contact for the domain. You may need to contact your existing registrar to make any necessary changes.

  2. You will also need to obtain an authorisation code from your current registrar in order for us to start the transfer.

  3. Raise a support ticket from your Account Manager, and inform our technical team that you want to transfer your domain name and add to the ticket the authorisation code that you have obtained from your current registrar.

  4. Our Tech team will then request the transfer for you. You will receive an email asking for confirmation that you have asked for the transfer - click on the link in the email to confirm it.

  5. The transfer will then be approved through the registry. We will close the support ticket when the transfer is complete.

Please note that these domains are renewed automatically when a transfer takes place, so you will be charged our domain renewal fee if applicable.

Transferring .co.uk domains to Netpivotal

Each .co.uk domain has a tag, sometimes called an IPSTAG. This identifies the company who has control of the domain.

Netpivotal's domain tag is NETPIVOTAL. By asking your existing registrar to change the tag for you the domain will be transferred to Netpivotal. We can then update the DNS servers if necessary.

Which domain names can Netpivotal host?

If you have an existing domain name of any kind Netpivotal can host a website for you. All that needs to be done is to change the DNS servers for the domain to point to Netpivotal. Our DNS servers are:-

NS1.NETPIVOTAL.COM
NS2.NETPIVOTAL.COM

In many cases you can also transfer your domain to Netpivotal so we can manage it for you. Please raise a support ticket if you'd like to do this and we'll check your domain for you.

When I purchase a hosting plan do I own the domain name?

You would own the domain; the central whois will show your name and address against the owner of the domain. It is registered in your name. If in the unlikely event you decide to leave us then you have two options.
A) You cancel your hosting and leave the domain registered with us and change the DNS Name Servers. Your hosting is cancelled and your domain would be moved to our sister company Onlydomainnames. You will have complete control over the domain and are able to set your DNS name servers to point to your new host. We will handle the domain renewals (A domain needs to be renewed every year) and will charge you a renewal fee every year.
B) You cancel your hosting and transfer the domain name to another host who will also become your registrar. We will charge you a transfer out fee and you will pay the annual domain registration fee to your new host/ registrar.

Details of our current charges can be found on the Terms and Conditions section of our website.

What happens to my domain name if I use the 30 day money back guarantee?

Once a domain name is registered for a year, it cannot be unregistered. Because of this if you cancel your account within 30 days and you registered a domain name, we will refund your hosting fees minus the cost for the domain registration.

Your hosting account will be changed to a domain name only. You will then have full control over the name servers for the domain. If you chose to go with another hosting company, you would just enter their name servers into your account manager and your domain name will then point to your new web host.

Please note that you can't transfer a domain away from Netpivotal for 180 days after registration.

How many domains can I have on one hosting account?

NetPivotal's Developer plan lets you host up to 8 domains with completely separate websites on a single plan. The Home and Business plans are associated with one domain name. If you have multiple extensions of the same domain name (for example, yourdomain.com, yourdomain.net) then you can redirect all these domains back to the same site.

Can I have sub-domains and what are the charges?

Both our Windows and Linux plans offer a sub-domain facility. You would not be charged any extra for using sub-domains - each of our hosting plans come with a minimum of 10 sub-domains.

A sub domain allows you to have multiple prefixes to your domain name. For example www.mysite.com, test.mysite.com, accounts.mysite.com. You can upload a completely different web site on each of the sub domains. One of the many uses would be to run a test version of your web site on a different sub-domain. This allows you to show other people, and test your site before allowing everyone to see it.

Web forwarding would enable you to have a main hosting account under one domain name for example, www.mysite.com. You would then be able to have a completely different domain name, for example www.myothersite.com, forwarded to the original site, www.mysite.com. You cannot, however, have two completely different domain names pointing to completely different websites on one hosting account.

Is a domain included in the price of my hosting plan?

Netpivotal offers a free domain name for life on all our annual hosting plans. As long as you keep your hosting with us we'll renew the domain every year for you.

Can you explain what DNS is?

When setting up your web site your likely to hear a lot of stuff about DNS settings. Domain name servers, or DNS, are an incredibly important but completely hidden part of the Internet. The DNS system forms one of the largest and most active distributed databases on earth. Without DNS, there is no Internet.

When you use the internet to view a web site or send an e-mail message, you use a domain name to do it. For example, the URL "http://www.netpivotal.com" contains the domain name netpivotal.com. So does the e-mail address "sales@netpivotal.com."

Readable names like "netpivotal.com" are easy for people to remember, but to computers you really are a number and not a name. All of the computers attached to the net use names called IP addresses to refer to one another. For example, the machine that you might refer to as "www.netpivotal.com" has the IP address 65.61.185.241. So every time you visit a web site or send an email you are using the internet's domain name servers to translate the address into a machines individual IP address.

Can I change the domain name on my hosting plan?

Yes, this is possible by adding another domain through your account manager. Click on the "Add New Domain" link and follow the prompts to add another domain to your account.

It can take up to 72 hours for a new domain to fully propogate, after this time you can raise a support ticket and our technical team will rename your account.

How can I add another domain name to my account?

Log in to your account manager and you'll see a list of all the hosting accounts and domains you have with NetPivotal. You can add more hosting accounts or domains by clicking the link underneath your list.
